FOLIAR DIAGNOSIS OF SUGARCANE - VARIATION OF lEAF POTASSIUM VALUE WITH AGE OF CANE AND RAINFALL

چکیده

The top visible dewlap leaf potassium (K) of sugarcane ratoons varies in an irregular manner with age ofcane. However, by increasing the number of leaf samplings, the fluctuation of the mean K values with age becomes less and less significant. As a result in Mauritius, where the running average leaf K concentration of 3 consecutive years of double leaf sampling is interpreted, age corrections of the analytical leaf K value will not have a noteworthy impact on the accuracy of foliar diagnosis for K status. Examination of daily rainfall which fell 30 days prior to leaf sampling failed to reveal the exact significance of moisture regime on the K nutritional status ofsugarcane. In some instances a high rainfall prior to leaf sampling gave rise to a high leafK value, while in other instances at the same site the opposite was true.

A Nutrient Survey of Sugarcane in the South African Industry W I T H Special Reference to Trace Elements

A comprehensive survey was undertaken in order to determine whether large scale deficiencies of major nutrients and trace elements exist within the South African sugarcane industry. The results indicate that the only extensive major nutrient deficiency is potassium, though sulphur levels in Swaziland and the Eastern Transvaal are low without actually appearing to limit sugarcane growth. There a...

Uptake of Silicon by Sugarcane from Applied Sources May Not Reflect Plant-Available Soil Silicon and Total Silicon Content of Sources

Soils of the tropics and sub-tropics are typically acid and depleted of soluble sources of silicon (Si) due to weathering and leaching associated with high rainfall and temperatures. Together with intensive cropping, this leads to marginal or deficient plant Si levels in Si-accumulating crops such as rice and sugarcane. Although such deficiencies can be corrected with exogenous application of S...

Sugarcane Response to Water Table, Periodic Flood, and Foliar Nitrogen on Organic Soil

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is routinely exposed to periodic floods and highwater tables in Florida’s EvergladesAgriculturalArea. Learning sugarcane responses to these conditions will help improve yields. This study evaluated the effects of constant water-table depths, periodic floods, and N on cane and sucrose yields of two sugarcane cultivars. In 2001 and 2002, two foliar N and four water trea...
